Storage and Moving is a Part of Life

Posted

Storage and moving go hand in hand. Every time I have moved, I needed to store things at some point during the process. My parents continually rented one of those storage rooms in a big warehouse when I was growing up, which came in very handy when I was in college and needed to store random items every semester. Every summer vacation, I would bring more things home and stash the things I did not know what to do with in there. I never really seemed to take anything out of there, though. I hired professional movers when I moved to the East Coast to go to grad school, and I scheduled a pick up there for those items I assumed I surely could not live without. I ended up leaving most everything in there and included them in a big yard sale the next time I visited my parents. That little storage and moving debacle hurt my wallet a bit, as I had to pay them for the two extra hours it took for me to look through all that stuff. I was young; what did I know?

When I was working on my dissertation and my now husband moved into my tiny apartment, we underwent the storage and moving dance together. He thought it would be easiest to put almost all his stuff in storage, since my apartment was the size of a postage stamp and I was already settled in. We rented a big house with another couple a year later and he was able to unload everything from storage and move it into the house. Our friends then put a bunch of stuff in our storage place. During the time we shared that house, we had various people who rented our extra room temporarily. Every single one of them loaded our storage unit to the brim. When we bought a house and moved out of the shared one, we used Craigslist to sell or give away the things we did not need. We no longer rented the storage place after that.

We were storage unit free, until we decided to remodel our house. In all our past storage and moving experiences, we rented a storage unit that offered no moving services. We always had to rent a truck or take multiple car trips to get things to and from the facility. This time, we decided to go with one of those transportable self storage services. We do not remember such a thing even being an option in all our past moves. The company delivered a big metal storage container to our driveway and it stayed there for a week, while we slowly moved things in there. The storage and moving people then transported it to their storage facility. After so many experiences moving things into storage via the old school method, this was like a walk in the park. Like our old traditional storage cubby, we could get things in and out of the warehouse and the place was secure. After the remodeling project was finished and we could settle back into our house, we scheduled a time for the portable storage thing to be delivered. The company picked it up a week later, and we got to take our time getting things moved back in. We officially saw the portable storage and moving light. See, we ARE much wiser now.
